A White House memo dated February 1, 1986, shows Vice President Bush and President Reagan supported a risky operation to sell arms to Iran to secure aid in freeing American hostages in Lebanon. Poindexter wrote to McFarlane describing the plan as risky, reviving Iran contra questions during the campaign.
At a Dover New Hampshire stop Senator Bush said he has not seen the memo itself only a summary and that it does not change his stance or credibility with voters. He insisted he stood with the president and that the memo's conclusion did not alter his position.
New York Times reports party chair Paul Kirk criticized Gary Hart for re entering the presidential race saying he placed personal goals over the party. Kirk defended six other candidates and called Hart s move a distraction that won t cause lasting damage to the Democratic push for a nominee.
Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa, exceeded the federal predicted mortality range for Medicare patients in 1986 with 23 percent dying within 30 days of last admission. The range predicted was 9 to 22 percent, and nationally 400 of nearly 6,000 hospitals fared worse than expected.
John M. Ely, a famed CR pioneer born in 1884, died four months shy of his 104th birthday after years of gradual decline. His son John Jr. recalled his father slowed, then stopped, choosing to die at home without pain, a sentiment Ely echoed at his 99th birthday about living longer.
