The Cedar Rapids post office posted an all time cash receipts high of $19,316.57 on Monday, surpassing the previous record of $14,902.84. Outgoing letters reached 346,369 and incoming letters 157,034 as parcel post and Christmas card deliveries added to the workload.
The Daily Record reports frigid temperatures and snow expected statewide with rising temps by Wednesday. It lists multiple marriages, police court actions, and a lengthy obituary roundup from Hastings to Monticello, detailing fatalities, services, and local arrests.
Frances and another resident were found dead in a Cedar Rapids area home after a heavy snow event. Railroads reported delays with Cedar Rapids trains late and air travel largely on schedule. Winds up to 30 mph caused drifting in Centerville and sheltered highways while roads remained fair but snow packed. Snow depths varied across counties with 16 inches in Walford and lighter accumulations elsewhere. Temperatures dropped to eight below zero in Sioux City as skies cleared later.
A broad belt of heavy snow stretched from Wyoming and Montana to New England. Watertown New York logged four feet with drifts up to ten feet, stranding hundreds of motorists and prompting a state of emergency in Jefferson county. Detroit mobilized nearly 200 snow-clearing machines with limited progress as north central states logged subzero readings.
The Cedar Rapids waterworks new addition is featured on the cover and lead article of the December issue of Water and Sewage Works. The cover shows the new structure while the article details the recently completed expansion program and its scope.
Supporters said President Truman will renew his request next month to Congress for approval of the St. Lawrence sea way plan. The project faces opposition from various groups and involves power and waterway development.
Iowa City grants general pay increases 5 to 22 percent for over 100 city workers. The council approved the raises at a special Monday session, effective January 1, with police and firemen to receive the largest boosts. City Manager Roan pushed the plan after a University of Iowa public affairs bureau report showed Iowa City lagging peers in several pay areas.
Des Moines report says Governor Beardsley asked statehouse employees not to give him a Christmas gift this year and urged funds be spent on their families. He will hold a Christmas reception for statehouse workers from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday in his office.
Judge Floyd Philbrick held that the K and L Theater Corporation may occupy the Town Theater premises at 310 First Avenue NE for 12 years, blocking Merchants National Bank from evicting them while the 15 year lease runs. The ruling strikes the sales clause from the lease after testimony showed ignorance of the clause by all parties. The bank plans off street parking on the site.
Probate records show the will of Frank S. Salda who died December 7 was admitted Tuesday. The widow Anna is named as sole heir and Lumir F. Vane is named executor without bond. Also, Grace C. Koppenhaver dismissed her promissory note suit against W. G. Koppenhaver Tuesday. James A. Maurice filed a suit Tuesday against Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schomel and Gladys Schomel for 62.61 dollars for property damage from a September 9 car crash five miles southwest of Anamosa on Highway 151.
In Utrecht, Professor J. M. W. Milatz unveiled plans for a 5000-ton atom driven ship. He said the power unit including fuel would weigh less than a conventional engine and would heat a steam turbine, saving coal. Swedish scientist Odd Dahl designed the reactor. Dahl built the Kjeller reactor near Oslo in a Dutch-Norwegian joint project.
Marine Cpl. William J. Rhodes of Cedar Rapids, home on 40 days leave after 14 months in Korea, earned two Purple Hearts and fought at Seoul Hungnam and Inchon reservoir. He attends Camp Lejeune after leave and played for the Butternut amateur baseball team. Lt Ruth Bryan to begin training duty in Washington DC. Iowa Safety Congress reports 600 Drive Right pledge cards returned as 100000 were distributed to promote safe driving during Christmas. Des Moines widow Mrs. William Garlock and four children lost husband in a traffic crash. Iowa Inter Church Council backs Drive Right urging abstaining from alcohol for safer driving.
City briefs include a story hour at the Sixteenth avenue branch library on Wednesday at 4 p.m. led by Miss Helen Crane. Henry Gundling Jr arriving from Stanford for holidays at 424 Fairway Terrace SE. Kenwood Variety and Gift Shop new gift stock with extended hours to Christmas. Boy Scout Troop 108 Christmas land court of honor at Kenwood Park Methodist Church with Olaf Olfsted as principal speaker. Also Cedar Rapids Home Builders meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt hotel with Bob King discussing concrete. Army Captain Robert L. Manville is ordered to Camp Stoneman for transport to Yokohama, son of the Manville family. O. E. Thorne of NPA Davenport office to advise at Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce on government orders for production and materials.
Miles City Montana AP two 16 year old teens Tom La Fave and Evelyn Donges were sentenced to life imprisonment for the robbery beating death of John Hoffman 38 of Le Mars Indiana. District Judge S D McKinnon noted two life terms under first degree murder law with one sentence also available as death pending appeal. Hoffman was found in an alley behind a tavern September 11 and died in hospital three days later.
Allied spokesmen said they want details of prisoners before negotiating further. Nuckols did not say if the U.N. would accept the list. The UN command will study the names to decide on extra names or inspections of the 11 camps where the Communists claim captives are held. He added that listing is not a full solution to the prisoner exchange agenda.
Vernon Bailey 80 of 115 Seven teenth Street NE was found dead early Tuesday in his apartment basement. Coroner said death from heart ailment. Body found at 4:55 a.m. by a tenant who smelled gas and investigated. Bailey born Sept 28, 1871 in Ridgeville Ind. Former Haegg Construction laborer. Mrs. Jennie M Springsteen died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 3 05 a.m. Tuesday after a brief illness. Born April 29 1870 at Vinton she moved to Cedar Rapids from Melbourne. Surviving are her daughter Miss Charlotte Springsteen son Forrest Springsteen a stepson William Carl Springsteen of Oakland Calif two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was a member of St Paul's Methodist church and the OES at Melbourne. Services 3 30 p.m. Thursday in Turner chapel conducted by Dr Marvin B Kober Burial Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
William T. DeLap of Cedar Rapids, 20 years a resident, died Monday noon in a local nursing home after a lingering illness. He was born in Buchanan county on August 1 1873. Surviving relatives include five nieces Eva Buser Estherville Viola King Winifred Robison Alene Smith Dorothy Edwards and Jesse DeLap Jr Musicatine. Rohn Chapel holds services at 3 p.m. Wednesday with Rev Russell A Pavy Calvary Baptist Church. Burial is in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Ruth Smith 55 wife of Paul V. Smith of 719 Eighth Street SW died Sunday in a Chicago hospital after a brief illness while visiting her brother David W. Abernathy. Born January 24, 1896 in Cedar Rapids she was a member of Olivet Presbyterian church. Survived by husband brother a son Sgt Jack V. Smith at Camp Rucker and two grandsons. Services at Kuba funeral home pending time.
U N military officers and truce negotiators held a strategy conference in Munsan Korea on future steps in Korea. General Ridgway, supreme commander, said military and truce delegations are in complete accord. Conferees included Vice Admiral Joy and General Van Fleet.
Campaign chairman Henry R. Ek reports Linn County Christmas Seal drive at $18,397 with $5,103 still needed to reach the $23,500 objective for tuberculosis and heart disease battle. Funds support research, health education, and the Iowa Heart Association.
Ella M. Warren 70 widow of Frank Warren died Tuesday morning in a Cedar Rapids nursing home. Born July 30 1881 at Van Horne she spent 45 years in Cedar Rapids and Marion in the restaurant business. She was a Trinity Lutheran church member and Trinity Missionary society. Sister Pauline Hoover of Cedar Rapids survives. Body at Kuba funeral home. Funeral arrangements later.

A B-29 bomber from Fairchild Air Force Base crashed in dense fog while landing at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport. Four crew members died, three were badly hurt, and the plane struck a dwelling, demolishing the house of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. McDaniels with only minor injuries to the residents.
A snow removal machine hired by the county rammed the pedestrian crossing signal on the courthouse crosswalk on Monday night. Operator Louis Blood said he struck the post while avoiding a nearby parking meter and the city will repair the signal as soon as possible.
Mrs. C. E. Sayner a 76 year old resident of 1030 Ninth Street NW suffered a hurt right leg Monday evening when struck by a car at 1st Avenue and Ninth Street NW. She was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment after alighting from a City cab. Police say she exited the cab from the left rear door and stepped into the path of a car driven by James Gillick of 1028 Ellis Boulevard NW.

Averill sustained second degree burns in a coach's shower while other sites report broken fixtures, soap on floors, and temperature concerns. The district plans upgrades including master mixing valves and increased hot water. The board also discusses staffing gaps and Garfield construction delays affecting space for students.
