Survey Weighs Homestead Exemption Effects in Iowa

DES MOINES Iowa state tax and planning boards will study potential effects of the proposed homestead tax exemption measure. WPA workers will survey property in all counties as part of the effort initiated by tax board members. The bill, sponsored by Senator A J Shaw Pocahontas Republican, would exempt the first 2500 in assessed homestead value while offsetting with sales and income tax revenue. The measure passed both houses with large majorities last spring but was vetoed by Governor Clyde Herring whose forces blocked an override. A technicality cited by the governor could leave the state without funds for a year.
