Iowa education chief Brad Buck asked Gov Branstad for 50 million dollars annually for 2016 and 2017 to expand reading initiatives and teacher leader support. The plan includes 8 million for early literacy, 3.2 million for an early warning system, 2 million for the Reading Research Center, and 0.5 million for summer programs, plus ongoing funding for principal and teacher leadership. The panel will announce the second phase of a 50 million yearly program that has drawn 161 applications from 170 districts and covers about one third of Iowa students.
