Local readers hailed bright displays as part of the Festival of Lights contest winners announced this season. Neighborhoods across the city showcased festive illuminations and community pride.
Ten eastern Iowa counties including Fayette Dubuque Tama Linn Poweshiek Johnson Cedar Clinton Scott and Washington report jails at or over capacity. State inspectors note the strain is widespread with 19 other counties sharing the issue as sheriffs seek public support for new facilities.
Marshall County Sheriff Ted Kamatchus, president of the Iowa Sheriffs Association, argues portable ceramic cells and electronic monitoring may help but notes high costs and uncertain success. He stresses building new jails as the enduring solution, with many Iowa facilities aging from turn-of-the-century standards and needing remodeling or inmate relocation. County voters are essential to fund infrastructure. Fayette County in the northeast faces similar pressures.
Retired Gen Colin Powell, son of the South Bronx, accepted President-elect Bush's nomination for secretary of state. If confirmed, he would be the first Black secretary of state and the first Black to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with a push to strengthen alliances and fight terrorism.
Cedar Rapids moves to revitalize the Czech Village with planning funds and a state grant. City funds support cleanup of former industrial sites along 12th Avenue SE bringing total cleanup aid to 2.4 million dollars. The Czech Village Association seeks a small grant for banners as part of a broader effort to attract shoppers and entertainment to the area.
Bob Thompson, owner of The Lark in Iowa City, reflects from Sherman Oaks on losing the longtime venue in a Dec. 4 blaze. He recalls 23 years of memories, the Dahnkes’ help when he bought the place, and his career path from construction to supper clubs after WWII.
