Obsession with toy key to Wright flight roots Cedar Rapids link

A Cedar Rapids father brought home a small helicopter style toy that ignited Orville and Wilbur Wrights imagination. The Wrights lived in Cedar Rapids from 1879 to 1881, later moving to Dayton where they built the Flyer. The toy sparked years of experiments culminating in powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. The Wright Elementary name remains the city’s only reminder of the family. The family residence was listed as 184 Iowa Ave, now First Avenue.
