Fire Protection Rejected Burned House in Cedar Rapids
A Cedar Rapids area house four blocks east of city limits burned Monday night after owner T. W. Hoagland and tenant Sarah Hobbs refused a city fire service charge of 100 dollars for the first hour and 50 dollars for each addi tional hour. No injuries were reported. The one story structure, valued at 2000 dollars, was not insured. Deputy Sheriff Phil Hoover said walls collapsed by 730 p.m. and the tin rear was melted. Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson said protection outside the city raises rates and leaves city areas unprotected. The tenants left children with a neighbor. Hobbs said funds were unavailable.
