Iowa City analysts track year end sales as a barometer for 1954 activity. Bureau economists note plentiful inventories near 80 billion dollars and reduced wage growth, with consumer credit rising slowly and durable goods softening after a 1952 peak.
Capt Lawrence Clement of Minburn Iowa, held in Italy after a highway death, was released to return to Salzburg where he serves with the U S Army. Judge Castellano provisionally freed him as trial date remains unset and unlikely. Clement was detained after the Italian Youth’s body was found along the Brenner Pass highway.
A D Knox 77 vice president of Farmers Mutual Insurance Assn dies at his Hawkeye home after a long Fayette county life. Born December 11 1876 near Hawkeye he married Clara Sorg March 23 1900 and lived on area farms until 1936 then moved to town. Survived by wife son LeAllen two brothers and two sisters. Burial arrangements pending at Emerson funeral home.
Santa Claus will tour Viola Riverside Maynard and Traer in Eastern Iowa this weekend. He arrives Sunday at 7 30 p m at Viola Christmas tree after carols and visits Riverside Saturday evening at the Community building. In Maynard after a 2 p m movie he will distribute treats. Traer follows a 2 p m Saturday movie at the Traer theater with a Commercial club sponsorship.
Seven Czechs who fled the Iron Curtain in a homemade armored car last summer will spend a Christmas in Iowa. Station WOI TV Ames and the American Heritage Foundation sponsor a 15 day visit beginning next Monday in the Ames area. Iowa State College’s station appealed to Ames residents to open their homes for five day stays.
KBIZ president James J. Conroy announced the FCC granted rights to telecast on channel 3. Construction will begin soon and telecasting may start in five or six months using a 100000 watt transmitter serving 50 counties in Iowa and Missouri from a 1100 foot tower at Dewning Missouri.
Des Moines reported Mrs. Chester M. Ingle of Fairfield is en route to Guam to visit her Navy Seabee husband. She left Des Moines and will join him on Saipan where he is stationed. Her husband Ollie is 25 and has served 15 months overseas with two years remaining.
Authorities investigate an armed robbery at a grocery store where two men forced the assistant manager Duane Ayers to open a safe and took over 100 dollars plus 40 from his billfold before tying him. A breakin at the Grace Oil and Iowa Oil offices yielded 50 dollars from an unlocked safe after breaking the front door.
United Press reports that Iowa cities spent thousands on Christmas light displays and decorations. Twenty-two cities invested at least 71780 for lights bells wreaths and greenery. Des Moines Muscatine Davenport Sioux City and others showcase bells stars and Nativity scenes with additional funding for charity dinners and city parades.
A Davenport 13 year old, Bernadine Pollock, in a coma for 15 months after brain abscess surgery, won a $500 jackpot on the Strike It Rich program. Dorothy Collins Giselle McKenzie and Barbara Ann Scott appeared on her behalf and answered questions correctly. The prize adds to over $800 already donated since national publicity began.
DES MOINES AP The Iowa Welfare Association will honor the top Iowan for promoting welfare work in the state. Prof Walter A Lunden of Iowa State College association president said a six member committee of welfare workers has been named to choose the recipient for next year.
The association will announce selections at the annual conference this October. The committee includes L. R. Cornwall of Sioux City, A. D. Figgins of Knoxville, Alice Reynolds of Storm Lake, Esther Artist, Elizabeth Palmer, and George J. Barbour of Des Moines.
Madison County Sheriff Cecil Letz and a state agent investigate nine breakins at Winterset businesses Tuesday night. About $68 cash and liquor were taken from the state liquor store. Entries included four service stations Iowa Power and Light Mills Motor Weems Implement and Grip Tire plants. Front doors were shattered in most breakins.
Des Moines Iowa Executive Council reduced the annual salary range for prison farm superintendents by 300 from the prior raise. The Board of Control had previously set 3,300 to 4,020 but now the range is 3,000 to 3,720 after considering subsistence needs. Art Wallace state personnel director explained the adjustment.
Carroll city attorney M. R. Tan Creti avoids disbarment after plumbing contractor Joe Wernimont recants testimony. Wernimont says he was misled and now confirms Tan Creti charged a reasonable fee of 1750 dollars, countering the earlier claim of 7000 dollars in the complaint filed by Denison policeman Joe Fitzsperger and Carroll salesman B. J. Comes.
Iowa state conservation officers plan a statewide deer census to measure the impact of a five day open season. Preliminary findings show deer take was lower than expected and a sizable herd remains. Jauron and Peterson reported 28 deer in one hour near Avoca, where hunters faced field closures after day two and farmers complained of senseless slaughter.
Davenport youth Donald K. Pigg, 22, held on 10000 bond on a federal charge for sending threatening letters to his former girlfriend Miss Cora Bell Gagne. He was arraigned before U S commissioner Edmund Carroll in Davenport after letters traced to Rockdale Texas prompted FBI and local police to act.
Iowa safety chief warns holiday drivers can become Christmas killers. Pearl W. McMurry says distractions, dirty windshields, and excess speed on slippery streets heighten crash risk and can turn a joyful season into tragedy.
Special to The Gazette reports Manchester city mail clerk Ray Jaycox injured early Thursday when his car struck an Illinois Central freight train at a crossing. He was en route to work, walked the rest of the way, then hospitalized for shock.
The Iowa City Junior Chamber of Commerce elected Wayne Goltz as president for the coming year, succeeding Charles Barker. Other officers include Jack Canney as first vice president Richard Hinman as second vice president and John Bock as treasurer. New board members are Loren Grinstead Robert White W D Bailey and Richard Carfrae with installation on January 5.
Charles Ray mond Clyde 27 of Davenport was found dead in his car on a side road near Sigourney. Coroner Kenneth Geyer said Clyde shot himself in the head. The body was found about 3:30 p.m. by a passing farmer and transported to Davenport from Reynolds funeral home.
Davenport high school senior Richard Alfred Gish won the Iowa Voice of Democracy public speaking contest sponsored by the Davenport Junior Chamber of Commerce. He will represent Iowa in the national finals in Washington, D. C., in January and receives a radio and television set, a Parsons College scholarship at Fairfield, and other Davenport chamber awards.
Carter Lake mayor Wilson Mabrey seeks a Supreme Court hearing after Iowa courts ruled gambling laws violated when diners left Mabrey events to play bingo. The case marks another bid to legalize Mabrey bingo operations despite prior losses.
The Rev. Charles W. Phillips of Des Moines was elected president of the Iowa Children's Home Society at its annual meeting in Des Moines. Vice presidents named were Homer H. Jewett, Mrs. Edward P. Cole, and Mrs. Addison M. Parker Jr. Dr. Wayne Vasey of the University of Iowa spoke on the society’s statewide private child serving role and educational function. The non-sectarian group has cared for more than 19 000 neglected children, works with ages birth to 18, places 50 to 100 children annually for adoption, and currently assists more than 500 children and unwed mothers.
