Charles City man guilty in 2017 Newton murder

Randy Linderman 53 of Charles City was found guilty by a Jasper County jury of first degree murder in the March 6 2017 slaying of Jose Ramirez Berber 61 of Newton. DNA evidence linked Linderman to Berbers underwear and a Buick LaCrosse was seen on March 6 2017 in the neighborhood. He faces a mandatory life prison sentence with sentencing date to be set.

Wapello County moves to abate abandoned properties

The Wapello County Board of Supervisors voted to curb unsafe abandoned homes after a garage fire on 1581 Blackhawk Road highlighted the risk. Under a new abatement policy, properties with locked or open access must be corrected or torn down within 90 days to protect neighboring residents. The motion passed unanimously.

Gas leak at Iowa academy sends cadets to hospitals

Dozens of cadets at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston were hospitalized after elevated carbon monoxide levels were detected in the dorms. Authorities found CO levels up to 400 ppm in the basement and noted a missing carbon monoxide detector. Ninety seven trainees were present with eleven absent due to a prior water pipe flood.
