DC-3 marks 50th birthday of aviation workhorse
The DC-3, famed Gooney Bird, celebrates six decades since its 1935 Santa Monica takeoff. Built by Douglas, it carried 24 passengers and helped 90 percent of domestic air travel before wartime fame and rugged reliability. Provincetown Boston Airlines still flies one with 88,000 hours logged.
