Halt to Car Devices Cutting Pollution Curb
The government ordered automakers to stop equipping cars with devices that disable emission control systems during startup. The EPA said about two million 1972 model cars planned for U.S. production are affected, with no action on cars already sold. One device under the car bed disables the system in cold weather, while a second device in common vehicles reduces effectiveness at low speeds. The devices appear on many 1973 models.
