Water quality efforts honored in Winneshiek streams
Iowa awards the Coldwater and Pine Creek Water Quality Project in Winneshiek County for cutting sediment by 6,223 tons annually and bacteria by 90 percent. Initiated in 2006, the 1.34 million effort promoted best management practices on 40,000 acres, improving brown trout reproduction and stream health while involving 49 landowners led by Corey Meyer. The project included terraces, buffers, grass waterways, and grazing systems, with farmers John Ryan and Matt Nierling noting long lasting, cost effective gains and environmental benefits.
