Cedar Rapids sets wartime bond record and honors local heroes

Cedar Rapids and Linn County earned national praise in 1942 for high war bond participation with 80 percent of workers investing up to 10 percent of earnings. Local ads urged support and funded planes and ships, including two B 17 bombers, three fighters, and the liberty ship Leo J. Duster, named for a Cedar Rapids resident. Leo Custer, born in Dyersville, rose from grocery owner to military leader and later state and national American Legion roles before his 1943 death.

Cedar Rapids Led Nation In Bond Drive Reputation

Cedar Rapids earned a wartime record for bond drives with elaborate campaigns in 1942 and 1943. Staged events included a mid afternoon car collision turned rally as 26 friendly workers sold war bonds, plus nationwide siren drives, parades, and shop displays. Secretary Morgenthau praised Cedar Rapids as a model for boosting purchases.
