Immigrant Printer Turns Album Card Into Christmas Tradition
Immigrant printer Louis Prang sparked the American Christmas card boom printing miniature floral and animal motif cards in Boston in the 1860s. By 1875 he produced five million cards annually with color- layered presses, employing 300 people. The National Greeting Card Association cites Prang as the father of the Christmas card, while collections at the American Antiquarian Society and Boston Public Library preserve rare Prang items including Killarney roses motifs.
