Poland clamps down as Solidarity leaders seized
Lech Walesa was reportedly seized by East German agency reports while Poland said he was free and treated with respect. The crackdown aims to choke Solidarity the 16 month old union born from the Gdansk strike as arrests target government and party figures including Edward Gierek and Piotr Jaroszewicz. Tanks bayonets and road closures followed while gasoline sales were banned. Washington weighed aid options with Treasury saying Poles seek 700 to 800 million dollars in new aid atop 741 million already provided.
