The Gazette notes inspectors will patrol after a snow event as about 4000 homes face hazards. A city program issues 48 hour warnings before tagging and billing property owners up to 50 dollars for sidewalk clearance. The piece urges residents to keep paths safe for walkers and schoolchildren amid forecasts of rain ice and snow.
Iowa City officials squashed a plan by Council member Bob Elliott to fund three firefighters and two police officers over three years from the reserve fund. They argued against tying salaries to reserves, warned against mandating future staffing, and said plans should wait until funding for a new fourth fire station is secured. They favor determining affordable positions in the next budget year through new revenue or cuts.
A readers compilation from Cedar Rapids and Anamosa covers police activity and public opinion on licenses for dogs and cats, university sports attire, and national questions. The piece includes critique of government policy, chamber leadership, and comments on a mall shooting aftermath with calls for family support and responsible gun access.
The piece rails against Republican Mike Huckabee and other contenders for alleged anti science stances. It equates Huckabee with Bush and accuses campaign rhetoric of promoting religious dogma over evidence. It cites stem cell funding debates and evolution opposition as indicators of danger to reason.
