A state task force voted Monday to provide subsidies to school districts facing enrollment declines. Public comments were heard at two meetings in Urbana and Center Point about a proposed whole grade sharing agreement with a date set for final approval.

Wanda Jean Allen 28 and ex-husband Lance Bradley Allen 39 were found dead at their Strasburg residence after Wanda moved back in to reconcile. The rifle was used. Lance reportedly said he would kill himself after shooting Wanda. Authorities say both died of gunshot wounds.
Los Angeles Times notes official Soviet press faulting the Armenian earthquake relief for poor planning and coordination amid a massive air bridge. A Yugoslav relief plane crashed near Zvartnots Airport killing seven and an earlier Soviet transport crash at Leninakan killed 78. An international inquiry will probe the crashes as救援 efforts continue.
Police say three Vincent van Gogh paintings were stolen from the Kroeller-Mueller National Museum near the Dutch German border after a break in through a window. The works include The Potato Eaters Dried Sunflowers and Weaver's Interior. Guards saw nothing amiss as officers sealed a 25 acre park and searched the grounds with a helicopter and tracking dogs.
Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jaeger says he will reappoint James Barnes as acting police chief for a second 90 day period. Barnes has led the Cedar Rapids Police Department since Jaeger removed Gary Hinzman on September 19. State law requires a new acting chief be appointed at least every 90 days until a permanent chief is chosen. Assistant Police Chief John Erger was named acting chief for one day.
The state law question over naming Barnes to the police chief vacancy lingers as Rep. Phil Brammer seeks AG opinion. Jaeger says hiring the permanent chief awaits the union lawsuit ruling and the outcome of the investigation delay.
