Pendleton as James Watt of civil rights divides critics
Clarence Pendleton Jr., chairman of the Civil Rights Commission, is a polarizing figure viewed as a bold, confrontational reformer. He opposes forced busing and argues affirmative action is bankrupt while backing economic development efforts and conservative group ties. Critics warn his blunt style undermines nonpartisan fact finding.

Christmas Star seen as ancient planetary show says scholar
Professor Karlis Kaufmanis, University of Minnesota astronomer emeritus, argues the Star of Bethlehem arose from a heliacal rising of Jupiter Saturn and Mars in 7 B C. He links Jewish astrologers beliefs to the Nativity tale and dates the event with multiple conjunctions and a late 1st century Bethlehem sighting. He also notes later reappearances in 799 and 1464 A D and predicts another such display in the 23rd century.
