Newland cites infant mortality gaps in U S and abroad
Ms Newland notes Washington DC infant deaths rose 10 percent from 22.2 to 24.6 per 1000 births in 1979–1980 amid social factors and limited prenatal care. She cites the Soviet rise from 26 to 36 per 1000 between 1971 and 1976, three times U S rates by 1980, blaming health care cuts, pollution, famine, and social stresses. Brazil is mentioned as facing a similar large problem.
