Sen Estes Kefauver closed the hearings on wonder drug pricing citing clear evidence that costs to patients are far higher than manufacturers' costs. Investigators reported Upjohn bought female sex hormones for 14 cents per gram and sold for 15 dollars per gram, a 19 000 percent markup.
In Memorial Coliseum Linn county supporters hear Representative Sam Rayburn blast the Republican party for leadership failures in farm and defense programs. He praised Leonard Wolf and urged Easterners to back a Western Democrat for president, hinting at Lyndon Johnson.
Secretary of State Christian A. Herter arrives in London on a mission to pave the way for Eisenhower at the Paris Western summit. Gov. Orville Freeman plans a Sunday visit to Albert Lea to personally assess the standoff at the Wilson and Co. packing plant amid martial law and guarded closure. He will not remove the national guard until danger ends. Lawyers prepare to challenge his authority in federal court.
GOP committee members urged Ezra Taft Benson to step down as secretary of agriculture. Senate Republican leader Thruston Morton said he would discuss the idea with Benson at the next cabinet meeting but would not press him to resign. Morton warned of farm politics affecting the election from the bread basket region and defended Benson against Democratic attacks.
An explosion tore apart a Titan intercontinental ballistic missile at Cape Canaveral as it attempted to ignite a second stage. The 98 foot missile rose a few feet before erupting in flames. None of the 150 launch crew near the block house was injured. A mushroom cloud formed and the service tower burned to a blackened hulk after the blast.
A Saturday night compromise ends the East West deadlock over a U N Security Council vacancy. Communist Poland and Turkey will share a two year term with Poland serving the first year. The agreement was disclosed by U S ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge after a conference with the Soviet Union and the two contesting nations plus Peru's Beleande, as the 1959 General Assembly session neared adjournment.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Nehru held a three hour talk on ties with India trading concerns over Red China disarmament and Kashmir. Officials said relations are at a high point and a communique will stress negotiation over force.
