Jim Leach longtime congressman and civic figure dies
Former U S representative Jim Leach, Iowa Democrat turned independent and later a Biden supporter, died after a career spanning three decades in Congress and public service. Born 1942 in Davenport, he rose from Davenport High wrestling to Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and the Foreign Service before Congress. He opposed Iraq war action in 2002, taught at Princeton and Harvard, chaired the National Endowment for the Humanities, and guided the UI Museum of Art project. He mentored local figures, donated art, and remained civically engaged, later endorsing Biden in 2020 and switching to Democrat in 2022. Funeral arrangements are listed by Leasing Funeral & Cremation Services with a spring celebration planned.
