Hospitals to report ICU bloodstream infections start Jan 1

U S hospitals will begin reporting patients who contract bloodstream infections from catheter use in ICUs on January 1 2011. The data will be public on a government website later in 2011 enabling consumers to compare hospital performance and patient protection. Catheter related infections affect about 250 000 cases yearly and cause roughly 31 000 deaths though most are preventable.
