Linn man pleads guilty in possession case amid probation review
Ronald F. Cooper, 21, of 1731 Sixth Ave SE, pleaded guilty in Linn District Court to a July 25 possession of a controlled substance charge. A prior drunk driving conviction led to a probation revocation hearing, which resulted in continued probation and transfer to the Department of Correctional Services. Cooper's probation stems from a May 25 drunk driving plea. In other action, 22 people were given judgments on drunk driving charges, including 23-year-old James E. Smith of Hazleton, who pleaded guilty to an August 4 offense and was sentenced to 33.

Recess and Rhetoric in a Frugal Era Satire
A wry column contrasts politics and economy, noting that voters feel recession’s sting while Congress enjoys breaks. It mocks the mental drift on nuclear debate and recalls cheaper gasoline, shifting from reflexive fondness for the past to modern travel and class distinctions.
