In Chicago, Western Conference officials convened amid talks on the Rose Bowl pact with the PCL, a 10 game Big Ten schedule, and revised recruiting rules. The meeting followed NCAA televised football policy stance and tightened eligibility rules starting at initial university registration. graders in the lower third now barred from aid unless grades meet eligibility standards.
Roosevelt and Arthur skating rinks will open Sunday at 1 p m supervised by Nevin Nichols. Other rinks at Bever park Daniels park Hayes school and Veterans Memorial stadium area prepare to open with supervision once ice is satisfactory.
Montgomery Alabama UPI reports coach Jim Myers of Texas A and M has replaced Sammy Baugh as assistant Southern coach for the annual Blue Gray football game on December 27.
John Nocera lauded Iowa athletic department and coach Forest Evashevski at the annual South Side Civic Club sports night. Awards honored 14 divisions including football, baseball, swimming, track, wrestling, bowling, boxing, and skating with multiple state and conference honors.

Favorable weather and a large deer population are expected for the 1958 Iowa deer season opening weekend. The Iowa Conservation Commission said hunting will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with shotgun use only and one deer per resident. Check stations at Cherokee and Lansing and field staff at multiple towns will collect data on herd condition and age for ongoing studies.
The Iowa Amateur Athletic Union men’s basketball tournament will start February 22 in Marshalltown. Up to 21 teams can enter, with the winner advancing to a playoff against the Midwest AAU champion to reach the national tournament in Denver starting March 16. Billy Cannon of Louisiana State was voted college football Player of the Year for 1958 in a United Press International poll. Cannon led the ballot with 85 first place votes from 293 writers and broadcasters. Pete Dawkins placed second, with Randy Duncan third and Joe Kapp fourth.

Ottawa Rough Riders coach Frank Clair said at a club meeting he is confident he can sign Randy Duncan the Iowa All American quarterback. Duncan led Iowa to the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl berth and was top pick in the NFL draft by Green Bay.
