Des Moines considers steep pawnshop license hike
Des Moines City Council weighs raising pawnshop licenses from 200 to 4883 dollars a year to close a 6.5 million budget gap. Secondhand stores would face up to 3256 dollars, with nonprofits exempt. Critics call the move unfair while supporters cite police costs for patrols of 18 shops and theft checks. The plan, part of a broad fee package, faces a December 16 vote.
