Moynihan urges Nicaragua chance for democracy viability
U S Senator Daniel Moynihan on a Central American tour said Nicaragua should be given a chance to prove its democratic intentions yet warned the Sandinistas have a history of not delivering on promises. He met junta leaders in Honduras and discussed with Sergio Ramirez and Tomas Borge. Moynihan questioned fully meeting policy changes while noting elections planned for 1985 and U S backing to anti Sandinista rebels in Honduras. In El Salvador, gunmen attacked labor leader Jorge Camacho but he was not injured, amid debates on land reform and threats against activists in the Democratic Popular Unity. A U S trained battalion pressed to dislodge rebels from Usulutan coffee farms.
