Iowa remains in drought with middle Iowa River areas in much below normal conditions. Soil moisture has degraded across the state as seven dry months give way to uncertain winter rainfall, with the Climate Prediction Center forecasting drought through winter outside the northwest.
The Thursday U S Drought Monitor reports most of Iowa still grappling with drought. Twenty seven percent in extreme drought mainly in the east, with over one third in severe, 22 percent in moderate, and fifteen percent abnormally dry. Only 0.5 percent free of drought.
The Cedar Rapids airport faces PFAS contamination concerns after testing in 2020 suggested possible presence near private wells. The plan to test 20 private wells, groundwater, and soil aims for an April final report to the Iowa DNR. The Hynek family home near the airport has spurred talks on water options and property considerations.
The Iowa DOT and partners plan a diverging diamond interchange at Wright Brothers Boulevard as part of a Cedar Rapids I‑380 corridor project. Bids mid-2024, construction possible by late summer 2024, completion expected in 2027. The package includes $57 million in new federal funds plus $28 million for adjacent work, with Grassley praising the infrastructure investment.
