Iowa lawmakers eye steady schools as budget concerns loom
Senate leaders say elementary and secondary education likely spared from cuts needed to balance Iowa’s budget. Governor Culver plans up to 40 million in spending trims by June 30 with extra cuts possible if forecasted tax revenues fall short. Treasurer Fitzgerald warns of potential layoffs and deeper cuts as recession bites. Leaders push a focused agenda prioritizing education, disaster recovery, and job growth while considering tapping up to part of the 640 million reserve.
