Chief John Sienknecht collapsed from a heart attack during a barn blaze two miles west of Clutier. Firefighters from Clutier and Traer battled the fire at the Dennis Hosek farm, 3:10 a.m. He died en route to a Waterloo hospital at age 60. The barn and 400 hogs were lost.
Paul Hamilton recalls a Sunday dinner at Waterloo in which he met the Sullivan brothers and their friend Red Sullivan. The gathering foreshadowed a war that would claim Red Sullivan and several of the brothers a year later. Details on page 8B.
Border Patrol agents confiscated 660 pounds of cocaine bricks wrapped as gifts at the Interstate 15 checkpoint. A 23-year-old Mexican national and San Diego resident was jailed on drug possession and distribution charges. Earlier, 656 pounds were seized in a car trunk driven by a 25-year-old Mexican from Long Beach.
The Communist Party U.S.A. restricts press at its 25th national convention in Cleveland. Delegates are urged to speak freely as only a few guests may attend the downtown sessions on Saturday and Sunday, with more than 500 delegates present.

McGrane led social ministry and teaching outreach for underprivileged youth in Jackson Mississippi after graduation.
Jeff Colehour of Stone City fishes with two rods at Pinicon Ridge Park near Central City on Sunday. He and a friend had a slow day, catching about 20 fish as ice ranged from four to five inches with some open water nearby.
