Fire ruins Jaycee toys and county voting machines
The Cedar Rapids Jaycees Christmas Toy Project and Linn County voting machines were destroyed by a Tuesday afternoon blaze at the vacant Eisenhower School. Investigators suspected arson amid forced-entry signs as toys and machines burned, threatening a Dec. 19 distribution. O'Brien urged more donations and volunteers to salvage the effort.

Hijackings end Venezuelan odyssey with Cuban surrender
Eleven Latin American gunmen hijacked three Venezuelan jetliners and flew to Havana where 102 hostages were freed and the hijackers surrendered. The planes were seized on domestic flights in Venezuela and stopped in Aruba Colombia Honduras Guatemala Panama and El Salvador before reaching Cuba. Venezuela said it would not pay the 30 million dollar ransom.
