Dorothy McMurrin of 2251 Blakely Boulevard SE reported two burglaries on Friday. A car theft of $25 in Christmas packages occurred, then a break in at her home through the back door, with a toolbox and tools valued at $105 taken.
Storm Lake reports a 4 inch rainfall. The weather bureau expects rain to change to snow in the southeast by evening. Colder temperatures with more snow likely Saturday night across most of the state. Lows reach upper teens in the northwest and the 20s in the southeast. A similar pattern should persist through Monday.
President Johnson signed a bill appropriating just over 2 billion dollars for military facilities and housing for the current fiscal year ending June 30. The amount is about 843 million less than he had requested.
The Senate ethics committee plans to present a code of conduct for members in January. The proposal aims to set standards for behavior and ethics within the upper chamber.
Erick Volk C R of 806 Fourth Street SW was killed in a highway accident near Chester Howard County Saturday. Injured was Norman Luloff of the same address and taken to a Rochester Minnesota hospital. Survivors include Volk’s sister Mrs Donald Buss of 514 Second Street SW and his parents in Germany. Body to Cresco funeral home.
The suspect served at a 1964–66 hospital for two years and forged Brown’s name on commitment papers and lunacy oaths to practice as a physician. He obtained a license under Brown’s name and risked selling drugs to a Groveton clinic. Paroled in 1956 for bank robbery in Louisiana, he had escaped earlier while serving armed robbery time. A nurse lamented his likable nature.
Wallace D. Lyon, 56, arrested at 8 15 p.m. Friday by deputy sheriffs on a drunk driving charge. He was found passed out in his car across the highway junction 30 and 150, and was held in the county jail Saturday.
Dwane Paul Aubrey 43 of Cedar Rapids died Friday night after trying to jump onto a Rock Island freight train on Fourth Street SE. He grabbed a rung, was dragged about 35 feet, and run over by wheels. Surviving are his wife Margaret Paxton, a brother, two stepdaughters, and six grandchildren. Military burial at National Cemetery, Rock Island. services Tuesday.
Cedar Rapids resident Thomas D. Crotts, 28, of 531 Eighth Street SW, was arrested Friday night on charges of drunk driving and failure to maintain control after he struck a curb, a sign, and a parked car on Fifth avenue SW near Ninth Street. The vehicle belonged to Donald L. Schillig of 505 Ninth Street SW. Crotts posted a $500 bond and was released Saturday morning.
Pfc. Galen D. Grethen of Emmetsburg was killed April 16, 1966, while carrying a wounded soldier under heavy fire. Viet Tollcond earned a Bronze Star after being killed October 7 while aiding a wounded comrade. Both citations praise courage that inspired comrades to rout the Viet Cong force.
AP dispatch from Taipei notes Chinese Nationalist intelligence predicts 1968 will bring internal power struggles and food shortages in Red China while Beijing pushes the Vietnam war. Analysts cite Mao Zedong, Lin Biao, Chou En Lai, and Liu Shao-chi dynamics, food shortfalls, currency shifts, a possible missile test, and upheaval in Sinkiang with rail and telecom disruptions.
Burglars succeed in three of four breakins across Cedar Rapids Friday and Saturday. At 3137 Shasta drive NE the Schwitzers lost 20 dollars, four liquor bottles and a blender after breaking basement door locks. At 4301 F avenue NW a window was broken but little appeared taken. matches found, drawers ajar. Trax Oil Co station at 803 Third street SE reported 33 packs of cigarettes missing after a front window break in. An attempted break in at 1140 C street SW showed pry marks but no entry.
Thomas G. Williams 39 of 1339 Second Avenue SE died early Saturday at an Iowa City hospital after a brief illness. Born December 13 1927 in DuBois Pennsylvania he was a Korean War veteran and longtime Coe College faculty member serving as dean of men registrar and director of financial aid. Survived by his mother three brothers and a sister. Friends may call Turner chapel east 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Body to Mohney funeral home in DuBois for services and burial.
Marion T McLain aged 86 died Friday after a short illness. Born June 18 1881 in Silver Lake Missouri he lived in Cedar Rapids six years. Retired from Liggett Myers Tobacco Co he was a Knights of Columbus member. Surviving five sons Eugene Cedar Rapids Claude Manassas Paul Silver Lake George and Francis St Louis three daughters Edith Gerringer Marie Marshall Gertrude Unterreiner fifty great grandchildren and thirty grandchildren. Services Tuesday at 10 am Seminary Parish Perryville with burial Mount Hope cemetery. Body moved from Monahan Stewart funeral home to Bey funeral home Perryville.
Harry E. Gruver 54 of 1396 6th Avenue NE died Friday after a lingering illness. Born November 14 1913 in Waterloo he lived in Cedar Rapids 14 years and was a retired machinist. He was a Holy Name Society member of St. Wenceslaus church married to Bonnie Seery in 1947. Surviving are his wife a son Gerald Gruver daughters Judy Ann Gruver Ruth McDonald a brother Charles sister Mrs Rudie Eder and five grandchildren. Services at St Wenceslaus church Monday at 9 30 a m Rosary Sunday 7 30 p m at the funeral home. Burial Mt Calvary cemetery. Body at Monahan Stewart funeral home with calling Sunday.

Lawrence, selected in June as an astronaut designee for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program, was among 16 military officers in training. The group included 12 Air Force, three Navy, and one Marine officers. He holds a chemistry PhD from Ohio State and a bachelor’s from Bradley, with over 2,500 flying hours and prior service in Germany and at Kirtland. Captain Edward J. Dwight was the first Negro space pilot training entrant in 1963 but did not complete the program.
Two people sustained minor injuries in two separate traffic incidents. Karen E. Byers was treated at St. Luke's after her car was struck when the driver fell asleep on Center Point Road NE near Thirty-second Street. Wayne F. Schnell, charged with failure to have his vehicle under control, caused the collision. In a second incident, Ordean C. Tonderum lost control on Oakland Road NE near Thirty-fourth Street and struck a parked truck. Tonderum was treated and released, while Verona F. Melton faced an improper parking charge.

Walter E. Brown of Kiowa Corp Marshalltown was elected president of the Iowa Taxpayers Assn succeeding Burray B. Nelson of Maytag Co. The group warned Iowa’s tax climate shows erosion and urged fair rational policy to attract investment and jobs. Hugh H. Hannah of Aluminum Co. of America was named vice president and Harry G. Slife of Bath Packing Co. re elected treasurer. Executive committee members named include M. F. Hicklin and M. D. Livengood with re elected Cedar Rapids directors Lou Boudreaux and R. R. Johnson for three year terms.
American advisers were ambushed and killed by the Viet Cong in a canal. Two South Vietnamese were also killed. U.S. First Air Cavalry division troops reported killing 267 North Vietnamese on the Bong Son plain, 300 miles north of Saigon. Allied losses totaled 16 Americans and 16 South Vietnamese killed, plus 90 U.S. troops and 19 government soldiers wounded. U.S. commanders said a North Vietnamese regiment was spotted, circled, and crushed. U.S. air force jets tangled with two MiG-21s 60 miles west of Hanoi. no planes were reported lost. Taking advantage of a break in monsoon clouds, Americans flew 73 missions against the North.
