French President Charles de Gaulle arrived in Algiers to push home rule as mob violence broke out. Special riot police clashed with demonstrators, soldiers moved into Oran, and about 400 were arrested with 350 to internment camps. At least 100 injured amid a citywide strike call.
AP dispatch says about 150 armed anti Castro insurgents fight in central Cuba after a new landing near Corralillo 120 miles east of Havana. Authorities dispute the claim though witnesses in Havana report battles with Castro troops and militiamen over two days.
In Malvern Pennsylvania a special post office box for Santa Claus letters lets children drop in their notes pull a lever and receive a lollipop. The idea comes from Frank Santone the acting postmaster.
Rutherford Ellis, chairman of the American Cancer Society, predicts a leukemia cure within one to five years. He says breakthroughs will come first in leukemia as researchers link animal cancer viruses to human illness and compare future vaccines to the Salk model. Ellis, an Atlanta insurance executive, spoke Thursday night in Dallas.
The Iowa Motel Court Assn annual convention and trade show opened in Cedar Rapids at the Sheraton Montrose. About 400 motel operators registered with tours of local plants and plazas, speeches on legislation road advertising and promotion, plus a banquet and awards ahead.
President Eisenhower departed Washington for Augusta Georgia on Friday to play golf and planned to return by Sunday officials said.

Eight white children attended Frantz on Friday, with SOS noting harassment of parents and workers transporting white students. An anonymous donor provided funds to cover teacher and staff salaries at Frantz and McDonogh.
An early Friday explosion at the Quaker Oats Co plant destroyed the heating mixing building. Fire raged 150 to 200 feet high until Chief Jesse Hunter shut off gas valves atop propane tanks, preventing further blasts. No injuries reported.
