President Bush told the Council on Foreign Relations that Iraq shows quiet progress in rebuilding its shattered economy, though ongoing violence slows reconstruction. He noted the U.S. death toll surpasses 2,100 as he defends the occupation ahead of the December 15 Iraqi elections against critics.
President Bush highlighted gains across Iraq including rebuilt police in Najaf and Mosul police stations and firehouses. Across the country the U S has renovated nearly 3 000 schools trained over 30 000 teachers distributed over 8 million textbooks and improved drinking water for more than 3 million people.
Cedar Rapids posts a 6.8 degree median daily temperature through Tuesday as Iowa braces for a historically cold December. The 1983 record low average of 8.5 degrees stands, with minus 19 at The Eastern Iowa Airport marking the coldest break so far this winter. State climatologist Harry Hillaker notes statewide chill surpassing 1983 levels, while Cedar Rapids records a 23 degree high on December 1.
On December 7 Cedar Rapids recorded minus 19, surpassing the minus 14 1976 mark and minus 13 in Iowa City, with other readings including minus 9 last seen in 1976. December 6 saw minus 12, and December 5 brought minus 9. forecasts call for highs around 16 today and weekend highs in the 30s with teens at night. Steve Gravelle The Gazette.
