CETA funds in Linn County hold steady despite talk of cuts
Linn CETA official Bob Ballantyne told the consortium board that Linn County will see 1 percent more funding next year than this year’s roughly 2.5 million. He said discretionary money from the secretary of labor has offset expected Public Service Employment cuts and 200 to 275 new clients will gain PSE jobs, with totals depending on wages. Six to nine months from now Linn CETA will spend about the same as last year as legislation delays release funds. Changes will shift to a new program in April, with staff moving people between CETA projects to avoid job loss as Cedar Rapids faces 2 percent unemployment and a skills training project at Kirkwood Community College and Rockwell-Collins may lead to permanent work. An advisory council will aid job training, and CETA grants and plans are due to the federal government by Dec. 31 with a Dec. 27 meeting.
