Democrat Stephen M Peterson of Waterloo began drafting an affidavit to challenge H R Gross as the election winner. A temporary Iowa supreme court injunction kept voting machines unchanged pending congress scrutiny. Peterson trails by 419 votes. governor Hughes withheld canvass signing, affecting Peterson's timetable.
A supersonic B 58 Hustler bomber carrying an unarmed nuclear bomb caught fire on a ramp at Bunker Hill Air Base Indiana. Three airmen were injured. Col. Paul Carlton stressed no nuclear danger and no radiation release, with personnel cleared except fire crews. The mishap cause was not immediately known.

In Georgetown British Guiana Marxist Premier Chedd Jagan's party narrowed a lead held by his main opponent as rural returns came in. Early results show Jagan's People’s Progressive party ahead with 61,548 votes to 55,? for Forbes amid a partial tally from 35 districts. A Cedar Rapids mother suffered smoke-related injuries but not hospitalization after a bedroom fire started by a child. she and her two children escaped safely with her brother also safe. The blaze caused heavy damage to the bedroom and smoke damage to the rest of the home before firefighters contained it.
The Linn County Board paused Tuesday as Supervisor Floyd Emmons of Marion left after doubts were raised about his legal status. Democratic Supervisor Anthony Scolaro argued Emmons did not properly qualify due to a bond issue, prompting debate over two shelved actions: a zoning change for a ready mix plant south of Central City and courthouse closure the Friday after Thanksgiving. Henderson abstained on the zoning vote, and Emmons’ status sparked calls for a fresh bond and reappointment.

Yoe Haley of 349 Twelfth Street SW suffered back, shoulder, and ankle injuries when a 400 pound lathe pinned him in an elevator at Barnard Leas Manufacturing Co. He was listed in fair condition at St Luke's Hospital after the elevator cable snapped sending it about four feet to the shaft bottom while Haley moved the lathe from the basement.
