Yanks Save 1 700 German Civilians from Nazi Doom

American troops of the 90th Division discovered 1 700 civilians sheltering in a mountain cave near the Saar river eight miles northwest of Saarlautern. Villagers fled to the cave to avoid evacuation orders from volkssturm officers who had barricaded the entrance with dynamite. The civilians, confined by Nazi authority, kept a communal kitchen and basic supplies while Franz von Papen’s grounds offered refuge. The absence of safe exits and Himmler’s grip on events left residents pessimistic about any Reich revolt.
