All His Steers Wound Up As International Champs

At the International Livestock Exposition in Oxford, 20 year old Bill Spratt had two steers in contention for grand champion with one Angus and one Hereford, marking a come from behind victory as both steers earned top honors in open class. Dakota, the Angus, had been reserve champion at Johnson County Angus field day before dropping to second at a Johnson event. Spratt plans for next year include seven more steers and heifers, while his father William R. Spratt was buying in Nebraska to expand the show string.

Ag Program Features Sweeteners Official A Corn Sweeteners

Cedar Rapids area ag bureau hosts its annual meeting at Linn County Farm Bureau building Marion Friday noon. Speaker Bob Henry, manager of technical services for a Cedar Rapids corn sweeteners firm, will address members. Recipients of bureau scholarship grants at Kirkwood Community College will be recognized during the luncheon, and at county fair and the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress Fifth place noted for the steer Herky purchased by Spratt.

Spratt family in Iowa cattle circuit with 700 acres and 80 head

Spratt and his father farm 700 acres with an 80 head beef herd, half registered Angus. Bill Spratt is Iowa Junior Angus Assn director and Johnson County Angus Assn director. He began showing in 1969 inspired by sister Dorothy, and his major wins include 1973 champion heifer and champion steer at Johnson county events. He placed sixth in 4-H last year and is contending for carcass honors at the International, where steers sold for 51 cents a pound. The top prize is 1000 dollars and a matching 1000 from the Hereford association if the carcass winner is a Hereford.

Iowa Distinguished Dairyman winners named in Waterloo

Five dairy men received The Gazette Iowa Distinguished Dairyman award for 1975 at a Waterloo ceremony. G Joe Lyon of Toledo earned the Ralph Keeling award for leadership as past president of the American Jersey Cattle Club. Recipients include W C Ballantyne of Lamont, Louis Elpert of Decorah, Virgil Kregel of Guttenberg, Maynard Lang of Brooklyn, and Richard Reinhart of Cresco, with details on herd sizes production and farm operations. Lyon and his brother Howard operate a 150 cow herd partnership nearby.

Leaders Get Honors head Lyon Jerseys operation

Joe Lyon, vice president of National All Jersey Inc, is a long-time dairy leader and former national president of the American Jersey Cattle Club. He has served on breed organization boards from 1950 to 1965, judged Jerseys, led the Iowa Jersey Cattle Club and Dairy groups, and earned multiple Iowa dairy honors. He and wife Norma have eight children, with a storied Iowa dairy career and Keeling award pedigree.
