East Berlin said two American soldiers were arrested after beating cabaret performer Werner Lierck outside a bar on 2:45 a.m. The incident drew attention to East German sovereignty claims and involved East Berlin police handing the men to Soviet authorities. The U.S. army had no immediate confirmation.
Autopsy shows a grapefruit seed lodged in the windpipe caused the death of 11 month old Karen McDonald in Cedar Rapids. Earlier a wool fragment had been removed after a choking incident. Karen, daughter of Mr and Mrs James McDonald, died in hospital Tuesday after being expected to go home. Services set for Friday at Turner chapel.
Five member Iowa Mental Health Institute committee meets to set up operations after a board of control discharge. Chairman is L G Schneider a 49 year old veteran staff member with 30 years at the institute. New appointees include Dr Julius Pietrzak Dr Henry Kosieradzki Mrs Vernita Kay and Robert Boyer.
Cedar Rapids and Marion planners debated a possible merger as a long term goal at a Cedar Rapids Plan Commission meeting. Members suggested joint exploration while considering a Marion annexation and a potential land trade on Glen Brook Cove.
A Linn County Peace Officers Association was organized at a Cedar Rapids breakfast with Sheriff Jim Smith as president and 35 to 40 officers present. Det. Capt. John Kuba was elected vice president and Mayor F M Clark of Hiawatha secretary. Attorney General Dayton Countryman urged the group and outlined six reasons for the county linkage. A second meeting was set for Jan 12 in Marion.

In Waukesha Wisconsin Jesse James aged 31 was found guilty of failing to stop after an accident and received probation.
Las Vegas AP reports farmer Paul Thomas tossed a concussion bomb into a gopher hole to scare the pest. The gopher allegedly pushed the fuse back out igniting a hay pile. Firemen saved the house and barn but 12 tons of hay burned. Thomas says the gopher still peeks from the hole.
Des Moines officials say a Tuesday night operation halted a narcotics flow in the city. Four men and one woman face state charges while two more, named Dor othy Tolson and Raymond Monroe, await federal arraignment as officers recovered heroin capsules and related equipment.
Harold Young of Des Moines, superintendent of the Iowa Temperance League, triggered an investigation into illegal Irish Sweepstake ticket sales after learning of state employee pools. Robert Stone, 45, an Iowa Tax Commission assistant director, was arrested for selling tickets as agents say the scheme involved bets up to 500 dollars.

Six Iowa City teenagers ages 16 to 18 were arrested for questioning and loot totaling thousands of dollars recovered after a wave of car prowlings in the Iowa City Cedar Rapids area. Authorities say the investigation continues and many stolen items were found at a boy’s barn and another’s basement with others still hidden at various locations.
A masked gunman robbed First National Bank in Lake Geneva Wisconsin locking nine employees in a vault and fleeing with a packing box of currency estimated at more than 100000. He disabled phones, used a false fire alarm, and departed in a 1955 Dodge hardtop after binding Vice-president George Allen.
Belle Chasse Louisiana parishioners voted to back a resolution opposing a Negro priest, despite Archbishop Joseph F. Rummel threatening excommunication of the entire Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish. The letter from the archbishop was read in church, urging acceptance of any assigned priest.
Two cousins, Henry S. Williams of Pueblo and Forest A. Williams of Holly, reunited after eight years but from the crash they incurred about $200 in damages each. They collided while driving new cars near Holly on U.S. Highway 50 after an ice storm.
