Justice of the peace sought probe into Wapello slot machines

In Sioux City C L Calhoun testified that as a justice of the peace he wrote to Attorney General O'Connor in April 1933 requesting an investigation of slot machine operations in Wapello county but received no reply. He said about 60 places in 1933 34 housed 100 to 125 machines. He offered a list but was told it was not needed. Raiders later halted activity in mid 1934, with some raids in June.

Jury Acquits Cedar Rapids Marble Game Proprietor

Lyman of Cedar Rapids was acquitted by a district court jury of keeping a gambling house tied to a marble type game machine at 300 First Avenue East. He argued no material rewards were given, only free games. The case followed a July 16 seizure of similar machines. two state witnesses testified.

Murder Confirmed in Dakota Farm Fire Killings

Seven shotgun pellets were found in the skull of Mrs. Nels C Jacobsen whose charred body was recovered with her husband and son from a burned Dakota farm home.
