Oldest cannon found in continental US in Nogales treasure
Archaeologist Deni Seymour unearthed a 3.5 foot bronze cannon dating to the early 1500s near the U.S. Mexico border in Nogales Arizona. The portable wall gun could fire buckshot and lead balls and may have accompanied Coronado’s expedition. The piece was transported in a Jeep past a Border Patrol checkpoint and is kept secure awaiting museum display.

AIDS activist Cornelius Baker dies at 63 in Washington
A. Cornelius Baker, HIV/AIDS advocate and former NAPWA leader, died Nov. 8 at his Washington home at age 63. His partner Gregory Nevins confirmed the death. He championed testing and care for minority communities, helped secure federal funding, and guided Whitman-Walker and NAPWA in expanding access to treatment and studies. Baker’s work long focused on Black and Hispanic patients disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. He tested HIV positive in 1987 amid the crisis and remained a prominent figure advocating compassionate care and clinical inclusion. World AIDS Day observances later paid tribute to his pioneering efforts.
