Eight area Catholic schools unite under Xavier Catholic Schools plan
Eight metro Catholic schools will form Xavier Catholic Schools for preschool through 12th grade, effective July 1 2024, with Regis Middle School and LaSalle Catholic Middle School consolidating at one location yet to be chosen to host about 600 junior high students. A study to identify optimal sites proceeds as task forces advise formal parish and school alignment to pursue a unified mission across spirituality, academics, student services, and budget efficiency.

One dead three hurt in Cedar Rapids apartment fire
A Cedar Rapids building at 210 19th St NE suffered a third floor blaze that left one resident dead and three hospitalized for smoke and fire related injuries. Police evacuated tenants as firefighters used ladders to pull occupants from windows. No officers or firefighters were hurt.

High school friends among four killed in Cedar Rapids crash
Two high school friends aged 18 from Davenport and Bettendorf died in a fiery two vehicle crash near C Street SW and Edison Road in Cedar Rapids last Friday. Police have not released a cause or confirmed other passengers. Also killed were Ruta Tekeste, 52, of Cedar Rapids and a 13-year-old child whose name was not released.

Iowa farmer admits cattle theft and fraud scheme abuse cases
Michael Butikofer 53 of St. Olaf pleaded guilty in Iowa to livestock theft wire fraud and bankruptcy fraud. Prosecutors say he used threats to control foreign workers at Fawn Hollow, diverting cattle from investors to a Wisconsin slaughterhouse and defrauding the USDA. A 2020 civil judgment ordered nearly 250000 in compensation to six South African workers.
