Storms Cause Fatalities and Widespread Injuries in Eastern Iowa
Secretary of Agriculture Robert H. Lounsberry said crops valued at up to 200 million dollars remain to be harvested in southern and eastern border counties despite a severe storm. Operation Combine, a voluntary effort by northern Iowa farmers, helped southern areas after northern crops were in. The storm caused at least five deaths and many injuries, with Mercy and St. Luke's hospitals in Cedar Rapids treating 15 to 20 snow related cases each. One end-user suffered serious injuries, Eleanor Shaffer, 53, of Springville, with back injuries after a fall at the Rockwell Collins complex. County and city vehicle crashes involved four incidents with city trucks and private vehicles, but no charges were filed.
