Jimmy Shine opens on Broadway with Dustin Hoffman

Broadway first night review notes Dustin Hoffman carries the production in Jimmy Shine at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The crowd outside protests Carla Pinza's dismissal as cast changes are explained by Murray Schisgal. The play is a witty but uneven tale of a 30 year old artist in lifelong struggle, with strong performances and lively music by John Sebastian.

Critics Grade Hoffman's Jazzing Turn in Jimmy Shine

Clive Barnes hails Dustin Hoffman for nimble performance that elevates a slender play into a vivid caricature. John Chapman notes the fantasy may feel exasperating yet Hoffman renders Jimmy Shine amiable and earnest. Richard Watts Jr. calls Hoffman a constant joy and urges enjoying the incidental charm over expecting a full play. William Glover praises Hoffman's presence as the strongest asset in a muddled Broadway debut.
