The White House reported 4,346 telegrams in reply to Senator McCarthy's appeal with about 2,992 in support and 1,354 opposed. About 1,500 letters had arrived with no breakdown yet. Western Union also notified a 3,500 message backlog to be delivered.
Rep Frelinghuysen urges support for Eisenhower in the McCarthy controversy while McCarthy claims White House telegram totals differ from his own tallies. He cites thousands of messages and plans to press White House liaison Gen Wilton Persons for answers next week.
After a seven hour tele phone deluge the Toledo Blade shut its switchboard at midnight sending home 40 exhausted staff. The paper received 9,870 signatures in support of McCarthy and 324 for McCarthy, totaling 10,194 responses to its front page call for readers to mail their letters.
Washington AP report says a presidential board warned the White House that East Coast longshoremen are set to walk out when the no strike injunction expires on December 24.
A mother aged 28 and her three young children died in a blaze that engulfed their Chicago apartment on Saturday. Authorities investigated the fire as a residential tragedy with investigators ruling it accidental.

Rescue teams recovered eight survivors from the Mt Caballero crash in Somo Sierra. Among the survivors are Paul J. Douglass of West Roxbury Massachusetts, seriously injured, and Jose M. Orio, a Spanish millionaire, lightly hurt. Thirty three aboard, 22 dead.
Allied leaders Churchill Eisenhower and Laniel favor sincere talks with Moscow on major issues. A draft reply to the Soviet note backs a Berlin meeting while opposing the European Defense Community and calling for free elections in Germany before a unified government. The date of the reply remains undecided.
Western allies press again for restored telephone links between sectors after Russia rejects the proposal. An American spokesman notes the move signals Kremlin reluctance to ease Berlin tensions amid a proposed four power conference. Former President Hoover told a House committee he believes Baltic freedom from Soviet control can only come through a world cataclysm and revolutionary changes. Harold L. McKinley of St Ansgar resigned as chairman of the Republican Farm Council in Mason City saying he was too busy to do the job properly. He had handed in his resignation last July after being asked to stay on limited months. Rod Kreger was appointed to lead farm activities of the party’s national committee. McKinley noted the council’s activities were expanding and could contribute more to agriculture.
The Des Moines Weather Bureau issued a forecast for light rain or snow across Iowa this weekend. Northwest areas could see light rain by Saturday afternoon with southeast sections later. snow is likely statewide Sunday with possible two to five inches. An additional disturbance is expected late Monday or day. Cedar Rapids logged 42 at 2 30 PM after a 24 overnight low.
Iran and Britain agreed to resume diplomatic relations after a 13 month rift over the nationalization of Anglo Iranian Oil properties. Zahedi and Eden led talks with Hoover Jr as a key intermediary and a radio speech was expected to justify the move. Kashani warned the oil dispute must be settled by parliament before envoys return.
In Deer Trail Colorado a handcuffed prisoner Frank Trotter of Sallisaw Oklahoma freed himself after a wreck and helped lift a car off two injured officers including Oklahoma investigator Leonard Ferris. One officer died before aid arrived. Trotter said he intended to return to Oklahoma to clear burglary charges and had no reason to escape.
