Standard Oil gains damages totaling 8.164 million after deductions for taxes and overhead, amid history from 1853 land grants and 1908 sales to settlers. Forty wells produced in section 36 of Elk Hills field.
Silliman Evans of the Nashville Tennessean and James G. Stahlman of the Nashville Banner announced a joint newspaper printing corporation to run circulation advertising and mechanical work for both papers. The Tennessean evening edition and Banner Sunday edition will be discontinued immediately. The new plant will serve both dailies while each maintains its separate editorial policy.
In Oakland California former heavyweight champion Max Baer becomes a father again as his wife Mary Ellen Baer gives birth to an eight-pound boy Saturday night. Doctors report mother and baby doing nicely and Baer had predicted a son would be a future champ.
County attorney Ed Goff ordered the arrest of Eddie and Al Firotto brothers from Chicago after the Corcoran labor case slaying on Nov 17. They were taken into custody Saturday night along with Joseph Bellini. Bellini, from Chicago, was also jailed. A habeas corpus writ freed the Firottos previously after alibis. An inquest into Corcoran’s death continued with updates on witnesses.
Seven convicts escaped from the Pontiac Illinois state reformatory on Saturday night while fellow prisoners sang. Six escapees were from Chicago and 24 other inmates aided in the breakout. Police issued descriptions of the seven men and their car, with Ramon from Springfield Illinois among them.
