Legislature Seeks Gas Tax Refund Fraud Controls
Iowa lawmakers consider a bill to tighten the gasoline tax refund law with new proof requirements. Applicants must account for all gasoline brought into the state and attach a disinterested affidavit. Eraser marks will disqualify refunds, while some changes aim to limit refunds to agricultural and airplane use but face constitutional concerns. The bill keeps refunds for gas used in grading and road work and is endorsed by State Treasurer Leo J Wegman. A separate measure proposes vehicle counts on primary roads to guide construction type, with standards set by daily traffic.
