Faith and Values Cedar Rapids Funeral Minister Keeps 3000 Programs
The Rev. William Harnish, 85, has presided over about 4000 Cedar Rapids funerals since the 1960s and preserves over 3000 service programs as memorials to families. He recalls early cases including officer Felix Barta from 1961 and a teen who died by suicide after calling for help. He plans cremation and a columbarium niche for himself. His programs highlight faces of the deceased, with Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer common readings and songs like Going Home and How Great Thou Art. He also runs the Wedding Garden site in New Bohemia dedicated to his parents, Salvation Army captains William J. and Viola M. Harnish.
