Heavy teen drinking linked to reduced brain gray matter
A Finnish study of 62 young adults in the Youth Wellbeing Project found heavy drinkers, defined as four or more weekly binges or heavy episodes, had smaller gray matter volumes in several brain regions including the anterior cingulate cortex and orbitofrontal areas. Researchers caution the study is observational and cannot prove causation, with genetics possibly contributing to both brain structure and drinking behavior.
