Johnson County center levy may rise in next budget
Johnson County taxpayers face a higher levy for the new joint emergency communications center as the initial 2012 budget proposes 3.3 million dollars in spending, a 1 million rise, with a levy of 84 cents per thousand, up from 70 cents. Some supervisors criticize the spending while staff cuts 133,000 from the draft ahead of a Dec. 17 vote. Sheriff predicts rise in gun permit requests after law change
Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar told Kalona Chamber members that Iowa gun licensing changes take effect January 1 and permit requests could jump from about 200 per year to around 600. He noted businesses may post signs, but trespass rules apply. guns can be carried into banks and hospitals but not schools. 18 year olds may obtain a professional permit for security work, otherwise ownership starts at 21.
