An itinerant salesman from Dearborn, Michigan, quit the shoe business after Hammond police investigated his price-bargain scheme. Lawrence Hofner, 28, admitted building up stock by taking one shoe from multiple pairs to let his wife pick a pair, using a station wagon and an index of catalog numbers from many Midwest stores. He often claimed his wife had sprained an ankle to justify the plundered footwear.
Hofner recounted a tale of his wife’s injured ankle then fled with mates of shoes he had borrowed. Police seized 100 pairs of shoes in his station wagon along with a card file and a typewriter after he attempted the same trick on David Dru ry who had heard of the scam from a Chicago colleague.
